General Political Science Minor

Requirements

The guidelines for the Political Science minor are as follows:

  1. Seven political science courses, not including Political Science 5(D), 27, 28, 40, 87, and 197SD - with a minimum of five upper division Political Science (POLI) courses from POLI 100 - 199 (except for POLI 197 courses).
  2. Up to two lower-division POLI courses can be used for the Political Science minor if a student would like to do so, from the following: POLI 10(D), POLI 11(D), POLI 12(D), POLI 13(R) or POLI 13D(R), and POLI 30(D).
    1. Please note that POLI 13, POLI 13R, POLI 13D, or POLI 13DR are all the same course, so only one of these courses can be taken for credit toward the minor.
  3. All courses taken toward the minor must be taken for a letter grade and a grade of C- or better must be earned. The only exceptions to this are the following courses in which a P/NP grading option is the only option: POLI 195, POLI 198 RA, and POLI 199. For these courses, a student must earn a "Pass" grade.

Minor petitions can be found on Tritonlink and are submitted electronically. Be sure to complete the petition correctly by listing 7 political science courses, at least 5 of which are upper-division.

Additional Information:

  • Up to two upper-division courses (a maximum of eight units) can be used to fulfill the requirements for a minor that have also been used to satisfy the requirements of a major, as long as both Departments agree.
  • Students must receive at least a 2.0 GPA in Minor coursework for the Minor to be awarded.
  • Students with the Political Science minor may transfer in up to two courses from outside UCSD to the minor. These courses include those from EAP/OAP courses, community college courses, courses taken at other 4-year universities, and AP courses. In order for a course from outside UCSD to be allowable for the minor, it must be a Political Science course, and transfer to UCSD with 4 or more quarter units each, and with a letter grade of C- or better.
