Do summers count as experience for GSRs?

Yes, if the student is employed at greater than 25% time overall for the duration of summer (7/1
to 9/30).

Are GSR rates negotiable?

GSR positions will typically be offered at a specific step that takes into account the minimum
previous experience required for the position and the complexity of the work to be undertaken.
There should not be an expectation that a position will be able to be offered at a higher step
than the department’s requirement and the student’s minimum experience would dictate.

What should you do if you have been underpaid?

Situations like this can often be resolved informally by reaching out to your graduate coordinator
or supervisor. If you need more information about filing a complaint or grievance please consult
the general guidelines; please note that your position’s title code will determine the
applicable procedure. You can contact your supervisor or union representative (if applicable) for
more information.

Note: Teaching Assistants, Graduate Student Researchers, Graduate Student Instructors,
Tutors, and Readers are represented by a bargaining union (UAW 2865). Represented
employees can consult a union representative (UAW 2865 Contact List) and/or fill out their
Workplace Issue Reporting Form (found at the bottom of “Workplace Issue?” page).

How long after an overpayment was issued can it be reclaimed?

HR contacts and UCPath teams (employment and payroll systems) should be working together
to submit for repayment during the same calendar year that the overpayment occurred so that it
reflects correctly on the employee's W-2. Overpayments can be reclaimed up to three years
after they have been issued, by California law.
