Kernell is the author of Going Public: New Strategies of Presidential Leadership (3rd edition, 1997) and co-author of The Logic of American Politics (2000), Strategy and Choice in Congressional Elections (2nd edition, 1983)and Chief of Staff: Twenty-Five Years of Managing the Presidency (1986). Moreover, he has edited or coedited three books: The Politics of Divided Government (1991), Parallel Politics: Economic Policymaking in the United States and Japan (1991), and Principles and Practice of American Politics (2001). His numerous articles have appeared in the leading professional journals. Professor Kernell's research interests focus on the American presidency and political history. He is currently editing a conference volume entitled, James Madison: The Theory and Practice of Republican Government.
