A Life in the Law

Practitioners Reflecting on Law and the Legal Process in American Life

"Illusions Lost and Lessons Learned"

William S. Lerach

In this pair of lectures acclaimed litigator William S. Lerach explores the chasm between the lofty ideals of the American legal system and today’s disturbing reality.  Our legal system promises equal access, treatment and accountability regardless of position or power.  But today we see a legal system that permits members of the financial elite to profit from illegal practices while shielding them from civil liability and criminal prosecution.  Police and prosecutors, protected by immunity themselves, arrest and convict ordinary citizens in record numbers.  The consequences are clear.  Disapproval of our legal system is at an all time high.  Wealth and power are increasingly concentrated in a tiny top tier.  Our prisons burst at the seams.

Drawing on his life in the law, Lerach will explore the causes and consequences of the failure of our legal system to meet its ideals, as well as the means by which courageous lawyers representing ordinary people can pursue justice in this hostile environment.

According to Lerach, we must approach the law not with blind reverence but  with a searing skepticism grounded in critical thinking.  Only then can we return the American legal system to one promoting social and economic progress, deserving the respect of all citizens.
